Medical translation focuses on transfer of scientific information by rendering medical facts and knowledge from source language to target language. Such a thought activity and language transfer is medical knowledge-based, while language is the carrier and reflection of medical information. Professional knowledge and linguistic expression are integrated in medical translation.OphthoBook is an ophthalmic textbook with a refreshing style, not the same as traditionally formal medical texts. It is written for medical students in a readable and interesting manner. Cartoons, fun facts, and famous quotes are also included. There has been no Chinese version of the book. Introducing it to Chinese readers will definitely help them enjoy the specialty of ophthalmology. This translation report aims to evaluate the relationship between scientific knowledge and medical translation based on the E-C translation project of OphthoBook. Acquisition and review of criteria for medical translation, stylistic features of medical texts, and basic ideas and concepts in ophthalmology are involved in the pre-translating preparations, as well as selection of medical reference books and specific dictionaries. Major problems and difficulties encountered in the translating process and strategies employed for solution are recorded and presented in the report with many examples. It is concluded that medical knowledge does play a key role in translating medical texts, concerning correct use of scientific terms, accurate comprehension of original meaning, and tactful expression in target language. Moreover, the importance of linguistic competence, translating skills, and cultural literacy is assessed. Thorough understanding of source texts and clear, coherent rendering can only be realized upon acquaintance with both medical subjects and rules of the English and Chinese languages, so as to meet the criteria, ensure the quality, and improve the efficiency of medical translation.
