In recent years,film and television industry have developed rapidly.The subtitle translation has been studied deeply as well.Having reviewed studies on documentary subtitle translation at home and abroad,we found that studies on subtitle translation only stayed in some chapters of audiovisual books.Hence,as an important part of audiovisual translation,there is still room for further study on documentary subtitle translation.Since its release in 2012,A Bite of China I has been so popular at home and abroad,which stimulated audiences' great interest in Chinese cuisine.As one of the most successful documentaries about Chinese cuisine,it plays a crucial role in transmission and acceptance of domestic documentary in overseas market for foreign publicity.Moreover,this documentary is significant in telling the true stories of China,making the voice of China loudly and setting up an influential national image of our country.Subtitle,an integral part of documentary,is vital for drawing audiences' attention and communicating.It is of great scientific values and practical utility in studying subtitle translation in A Bite of China I from audience aspect in the background of strengthening the country's cultural soft power,consolidating foundation for foreign-oriented cultural exchange,disseminating the values of modern China and sizing the right of speech in international affairs.This thesis studies subtitle translation in A Bite of China I from audience aspect.From Skopos theory,the prospective translation end determines the translation process.The target text must be sufficiently coherent to allow the intended addressees to comprehend it,given their assumed background knowledge and situational circumstances and there must be coherence between outcome of the translation action and the source text.For satisfaction of audiences' needs,their background knowledge,linguistic expression,reading habits,education,cultures and traditions should be considered in subtitle translation to improve the acceptability of the translation so as to enhance the vocative functions of international publicity.Having reviewed on subtitle translation at home and abroad,the values and feasibility of this study is established.The analysis of constraints,linguistic features and cultural features of the source subtitle text lay a solid foundation for further translation study.From their different levels of knowledge about China,the audiences are ordinary audiences who are interested in China and want to learn more about China through the documentary,the special audiences who are gastronomes and audiovisual work producers,and the expert audiences who study China and Chinese culture.From Maslow's hierarchy of needs,their needs are primary needs,intermediate needs and advanced needs.With many examples,under the guidance of the three rules,this thesis concludes with the translation strategies for the satisfaction of audiences' needs.
