Many researchers hold such an opinion: there is no real Modernism in China. Indeed,Modernism, as well as Romanticism and other schools of literature, was imported fromthe West, full of exotic taste. Nevertheless, when western Modernism was introduced bymost Chinese writers, it integrated with traditional Chinese culture and became theModernism with Chinese characteristics, not purely western,Because the strongrationality and objectivity of Western modernism does not adapt to the situation of China.Modern poetry was a charming presence of Modernism in China’s30’s, whichpromoted the development of China’s New poetry in the communication betweenChinese culture and western culture. In the growing process of Modern poetry, DaiWangshu affected the tendency of poetry creation of his time with a unique style and thefusion of Chinese and Western writing characteristics and became the leader of Modernpoetry. This paper will study Dai Wangshu and his practice of Modern Chinese poetryfrom the perspective of Modernism.This thesis has several parts.The introductory part defines Modernism and introduces the origin of China’sModern poetry and the current research of Dai Wangshu. At the same time, the creativepoints of this thesis are pointed out.Chapter1studies Dai’s writing status and characteristics from the panorama ofModern poetry. This chapter describes Dai’s transformation from “Xin Yue” to“Modern” in writing and the reasons from three different directions. Meanwhile it citesthe previous views to prove that Dai’s work is the optimal integration of Chineseclassical literature and Western Modernism, which paves the way for later discussion. Ontop of that, this chapter discuss Dai’s important role in linking the future and past writing.Chapter2studies his work:“My Memory”. Dai walked out from”the beautifulmusical world” with bold exploration and innovation, completing a magnificenttransformation. His work “Wangshu Grass” represents the full maturation of his writingstyle. In the analysis of this work, Modernism in Dai’s work is studied. Dai referred towestern images as writing material, reflecting Modernism element.Chapter3discusses modernity of Dai’s creation from the three aspects of poetics, which are emotional, form, content.The fourth chapter introduces Dai’s changes in mentality and poetry creation afterthe breakout of the Anti-Japanese War and his influence on the development of modernpoetry.The conclusion part elaborates modernity of Dai’s poems and looks into the futureresearch of Dai Wangshu.Dai Wangshu was a leader of Modern poetry, integrating Chinese classical literatureand modernism perfectly. He created a new era of poetry creation, and enriched poetrytheories.
