In this paper, the object of study is the monosyllabic verb of AA type and the two-syllable verb ofABAB type in modern Chinese. The basic corpus is ‘Modern Chinese Dictionary’(6th edition),‘ChineseVerb Usage Dictionary’ and the Peking University Corpus. And followed the three-dimensional grammartheory as the basic guiding ideology. We tried to explore the conditions of modern Chinese verbreduplication comprehensively and systematically from several aspects—the lexical semantics, the syntaxsemantics, the pragmatics psychological and the linguistic environment.First of all, we statisticed all of the monosyllabic verb and two-syllable verb in ‘Modern ChineseDictionary’(6th edition)(the dictionary includes all of the commonly used words in modern Chinese),andtried to statisticed the number and the rate of modern Chinese reduplication verbs,so that we have anoverall understanding of the them.Secondly, we uesd the three-dimensional grammar theory to research the conditions that why someverbs could overlap while some could not. There are three reasons.Firstly,in the lexical semantics, typicalaction behavior verbs have the strongest overlapping, which are the mainstream of all overlapping verbs, and the meaning of the words themselves have characteristics of information and complimen. And thenext,in the syntax semantics, we put the factor of time as a breakthrough, find that the verbal reduplicationhas unfinished, persistent and dynamic characteristics. Thirdly,in the pragmatic psychological aspect, theverbal reduplication has the characteristics of controllability, autonomy and willingness.Thirdly,we also analyzed the influence from the context. Words and its context are closely related. From the stylistic point of view, the spoken language and the literary written register are the hotbed of theverbal reduplication. And from the types of sentence, the meaning of imperatives sentences and affirmativesentences is consistent with the verbal reduplication. Finally, we pue all of the conditions above and think that should derive from the verbal reduplication’sfundamental grammatical sense—the meaning of trying.
