This is a translation report. This report uses the translation of A Mercy’s chapters(Chapter7, Chapter8and Chapter9) as the source text. A Mercy is a long novel publishedin2008, written by American black authoress Toni Morrison. Three students translate thenovel together; I translate Chapter Seven, Chapter Eight and Chapter Nine, and write thistranslation project report accordingly.The main line of this novel is the story of finding blacksmith, other stories complementthe main line to complete the whole line. Moreover, the characteristic and translationdifficulty of this novel is multi-angle narration. For the Chapter Seven, Chapter Eight andChapter Nine, the author uses first person narration in the Chapter Seven and Chapter Nine,the third person in the Chapter Nine. The three chapters (Chapter Seven, Chapter Eight andChapter Nine) are at the very core of this novel, especially the ending of the Chapter Ninewhich is the climax has come to the purpose of writing. In the three chapters, the authornarrate some things happened in the travel which Florens find blacksmith and Sorrow’smiserable life.There are four parts in this report. Part One is translation project description, includingthe background, target and significance. Toni Morrison is the first black lady who won theNoble Prize in Literature. She has deep influence on the American literature even the worldliterature. So translating her ninth novel which was published in2008is the big challenge forthe translator, especially there is no Chinese version in China. Part Two is text analysis,introducing the authoress and summarizing the novel. Part Three is translation difficulties andtranslation method, including the preparation before translating and the translation methoddealing with the difficulties. The report is based on Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory to deal with the difficult points, and adopts four translation methodologies, there are freetranslation, supplementation translation, omission translation and separating translation. Partfour is the translation experience gained from this translating and the unsolved issues.
