Report On Chinese Translation Of Excerpts In "Crime Scene Investigation:a Guide For Law Enforcement" And "Criminal Psychology And Forensic Technology"

In recent years, crime scene investigation and criminal psychology analysis in criminal detection has played a more and more important role, but in China their application in the police investigation is still in the initial stage. In order to let more Chinese policemen recognize the importance of these two points, the author tries to translate related English documents into Chinese. The author hopes that through the reading of such translation more Chinese policemen can learn more about crime scene investigation and crime psychological analysis, integrate such knowledge into their investigation, and solve their cases more quickly and more efficiently. The original texts are from two sources:the whole of a research report by the United States Department of Justice and National Institute of Justice Crime Scene Investigation:A Guide for Law Enforcement and the second a passage namely Section2of Chapter3in Dr. Grover Maurice Godwin’s Criminal Psychology and Forensic Technology. In translation progress, the translator in detail records the whole translation and writes the report.This translation project is an attempt to apply translation theory and translation methods, skills and strategies the author has learned as a graduate student to practical translation, to become more clearly aware of translation problems, to learn to understand translation theory more profoundly, and to work towards the formation of better translating habits through this coordination of theory and practice. This report is divided into four parts. The first part introduces the source text, the text’s background, and language characteristics. The second part reviews the preparatory work before translation including the accumulation of legal background knowledge, the collection of reference books and legal terms, the duration of the translation, and quality control efforts. The third part analyzes problems encountered through specific examples from the translation. The analysis includes questions about vocabulary, sentence and discourse cohesion, punctuation, and translation contradictions, etc. The fourth part summarizes the author’s thoughts about translation theory and suggested solutions to problems.
