The Industrial Revolution has greatly changed people’s life, with thedevelopment of technology and science, hundreds of thousands inventions emerged, and correspondingly the importance of patent protection is realized by more and morepeople. While the function of patent has been enriched today, it plays not only the roleof intellectual protection, but also the role of information communication. Among thempatent specification contains the most significant messages of an invention whichraises the necessity and importance of patent specification translation. As the famous German functionalist theory forerunner Katharina Reiss said, thefirst step to translate a text should be the analysis of the text. Even patent specificationis belonging to technical articles but it own a rather unique feature. Numeroustechnical terms and legal terms are adapted in patent specification which distinguishedit from other technical articles. Patent protection was much earlier developed in westworld than China, so that there is a big difference between Chinese and U.S. patentspecification, such as writing styles, texts types and the scope of protection etc. Manyproblems exist in the practical process of translation, take these for instance: abundantuse of technical terminologies; abbreviations; official vocabularies and legalvocabularies; long sentences and complex sentences; use of new items and so on. Withthe guidance of communicative translation, specific translation strategies as follows areadopted: imitating translation, melding translation and creating translation. There areother problems, such as the format differences and style differences, no matter what, the translation strategies should always be suit for the practical situation.
