A Translation Practice Report On An Introduction To Islamic Finance:Theory And Practice (Chapter1)

This is a translation practice report. The source text is the first chapter of An Introduction to Islamic Finance:Theory and Practice. Based on a brief introduction to the translation practice background, the significance of the practice as well as the characteristics of the original text, the report summarizes the difficulties that the translator confronts in translation and discusses the methods and techniques in handling them. Under the guidance of Hans Vermeer’s Skopos Theory, the purpose of translation is prioritized in the whole process of translation, which is to inform Chinese financial scholars with a better understanding of Islamic finance, helping them absorb the essence of it and promote better and faster development of the Chinese economy. The source text is characterized by its use of formal words and long sentences. Therefore, the translation methods and techniques applied by the author include literal translation, free translation, conversion, splitting, etc.. Through the translation practice, the author of this report realizes that Vermeer’s Skopos theory is of great significance in guiding translation practice and that to be a good translator requires the perseverance with learning and the resolution to strive for perfection.This report is divided into four parts. Part One is Introduction, including the translation practice background, objective and significance. Part Two is the analysis of the source text, including lexical, grammatical and syntactic features of the source text. Part Three is about translation difficulties and methods, including translation difficulties, and an explanation of translation methods and techniques under the guidance of Vermeer’s Skopos Theory. Part four concludes with the lessons and implications from the translation practice.
