Researches on explicitation as a strategy and explicitness as a supposed universal of translated text have mushroomed since1990s. Generally speaking, explicitation refers to the technique of making explicit in the target text information that is implicit in the source text. Current studies of explicitation are mostly concentrated on explicitation in translation, with relatively fewer studies touch upon interpreting.Against the backdrop, this thesis conducts an empirical research on the Q&A sessions in the2012Press Conference given by the former Premier Wen Jiabao after the conclusion of the NPC and CPPCC sessions, interpreted by Zhang Lu in the consecutive mode. The thesis aims to study explicitation as a feature in the product of consecutive interpreting (CI) in political setting. To be more specific, this paper attempts to validate explicitation as a prominent feature in C-E CI in political setting, and explore the pattern and possible geneses of the application of explicitation. To achieve these objectives, the author proposes three questions:1. Is explicitation prominent as a feature in the product of consecutive interpreting in political setting with reference to the language combination of Chinese and English?2. How to pattern the phenomenon of explicitation in C-E CI in political setting?3. What are the possible geneses of the application of explicitation in C-E CI in political setting? The thesis consists of six chapters:Chapter One briefs on the background, rationale and significance, research objectives and research questions, as well as the organizations of the thesis. Chapter Two reviews previous studies on explicitation home and abroad. Chapter Three establishes the theoretical framework of the thesis. Chapter Four presents the observational study on the interpreting of the Q&A sessions in2012Press Conference given by Premier Wen Jiabao after the conclusion of the NPC and CPPCC sessions. Chapter Five explores the possible geneses of explicitation in CI. Chapter Six proposed the findings of the study, draws a conclusion of the thesis, indicates the limitation of the thesis and makes tentative suggestions to the future study in this area. |
