Discourse markers(henceforth DMs or DM)is a concept developed from logic connectives.Although research have been done on the classifications and functions of DMs under various criterion,no well-recognized classification has been reached.Explicitation,a commonly used strategy in both translation and interpreting, aims to make explicit the implicit contents of the source text(henceforth ST).Inadequacy is often noted in the lack of an objective theoretical framework for studying explicitation in interpreting, which could be adapted after the framework constructed in translation.Influenced by the reasons like the differences between Chinese and English, professional interpreters use DMs in Chinese-English consecutive interpreting(henceforth C-E CI)to make explicit some contents of the ST such as the implicit logic links. Therefore, the rules of using DMs in C-E CI and the contents such DMs make explicit contribute to improving the quality of interpreting products. This thesis aims to study how professional interpreters use different types of DMs to make explicit various contents of the ST with the help of a corpus based on 3 press conferences by Foreign Minister Wang Yi.3 research questions are raised to achieve the aim:(1)What types of DMs are used in the target texts(henceforth TT)by the professional interpreter during the observed C-E CI?(2)How does the observed professional interpreter make explicit the ST through using DMs in the TT?(3)What are the motivations for the observed professional interpreter to make explicit the ST by using DMs in C-E CI?Under a theoretical framework adapted after functional linguistics for studying explicitation in translation proposed by Huang(???,2015),this study endeavors to explore the explicitation in C-E CI.The major significance is that this study readjusts the classifications of DMs and makes a connection between DMs and explicitation in interpreting based on their shared functions. This thesis concludes that professional interpreters use the phrases with notional or procedural meanings as DMs with the purpose of making explicit the inner logic links, the replaced and omitted contents of the ST,which facilitate the communication between the speaker and listeners through providing indication, making constraints and achieving coherence.
