As an epigram is a brief, interesting, memorable, and sometimes surprising orsatirical statement based on people’s practical experience, also an essence related tohistory and culture, which guides and encourages offsprings. It plays an importantrole in verbal communication:not only vividly and briefly expresses the classic mind, but also stimulates the delivery, more idiomatic and inspiring in the speech andwriting. Through social progress, political reform and economic development, thevariants of epigram witness the psychological and conceptual changes towards peoplewhose alteration reflects on languages. Therefore, it is indeed an effective way tounderstand social, political and economic changes by means of studying epigram. From Oscar Wilde’s style, every word counts, and uses that reminder as a factorin producing the aesthetic effect throughout his life, which profoundly concerns eachindividual’s inner happiness, just as the way they live inside of the materialpossession they own.As this thesis is divided into four chapters to develop into the three epigrameffects of designate, rhetorical and stimulative functions step by step, chapter oneunveils the report by detailed task description, with brief introduction on the author, the article, the background, the translation and the reasons for the selection. Naturally, chapter two relates to the process description, including preparation before, duringand after the translation to present a thorough picture on how the report systematicallyimplements in the following months. What is worth words is that the theoreticalframework, putting communicative function into the subsequent chapter case analysis. The case study exquisitely collects the epigrams involved in the work, being classifiedthem into political, economic, conceptual and social categories for analyzing andexplores five translation strategies during the analysis, namely, literal translation, freetranslation, the combination of those two, correspondence translation and the last oneparaphrase. Last but importantly goes to the summary and conclusion part, giving thequality-control and style-reproduction of the whole translation. Hope the report shedsome humble lights on the translation study and do make contribution to the progressof translation circle.
