Tongwei county, located in the north bank of Sandu River which is one of thebranch of Wei He, is the state-level poverty-stricken counties with a population ofmore than four hundred thousand people where more than90%of the agriculturalpopulation is dependent on the natural conditions,“Gansu is the poorest in China,while Tongwei is the poorest in Gansu” is a vivid and accurate description ofTongwei.With the reform and opening up, Tongwei, which is well known for outstandingpainting and calligraphy art, has unexpectedly been one of the first six Hometowns ofChinese painting and calligraphy art by the Ministry of Culture. Most of the famousnational painting and calligraphy artists, such as Jia Pingwa, Wang Guozhen, Liu Yi,Li Wei, Zhang Likui Liu Bingsen, were attracted to communicate to Tongwei, thusdeveloping another flourishing culture of Tongwei painting and calligraphy.Tongwei painting and calligraphy culture is not only playing an important part inpromoting the local economic growth, but more importantly in performing as thepositive function of social structure, social integration and moral education, especiallyin local social construction of spiritual civilization.The article mainly includes the following sections:Introduction is intended to give a general description about the history of topicsand the significance of research, and then introduces research methods and ideas.The first chapter will be a brief introduction to Gansu Tongwei calligraphyculture phenomenon, painting, calligraphy and its development history as well asTongwei calligraphy creation, consumption and collection.The second chapter discusses the spiritual values of Tongwei painting andcalligraphy culture containing a positive function in the social structure.Chapter three dwells on the development, opportunities and challenges of GansuTongwei painting and calligraphy industry as well as its significance of cultureindustrializationChapter four concentrates on the ideas, management and service regulation of thedevelopment and prosperity of Tongwei painting and calligraphy culture in the future. The conclusion of this article is on the whole, the opportunities and challenges ofTongwei cultures of painting and calligraphy and developments.
