Tongwei county, located in the north bank of Sandu River which is one of thebranch of Wei He, is the state-level poverty-stricken counties with a population ofmore than four hundred thousand people where more than90%of the agriculturalpopulation is dependent on the natural conditions,“Gansu is the poorest in China,while Tongwei is the poorest in Gansu” is a vivid and accurate description ofTongwei.With the reform and opening up, Tongwei, which is well known for outstandingpainting and calligraphy art, has unexpectedly been one of the first six Hometowns ofChinese painting and calligraphy art by the Ministry of Culture.
