Since the1990s, with the growing prosperity and competition of the mass media inChina, the “media culture” which combines communication and culture into an organicwhole and blends the market logic together has been formed. Its formation has powerfulfunctions. It not only changes the aesthetic connotation of literature, but also has led to thetransformation of the literary ecological environment and cultural paradigm. The writer’sideas, life experience, artistic pursuit, the formation of the literary trend, and the audience’saesthetic taste are all obviously constrained by the mass media culture. With the help ofnetwork and modern media such as movies, Liuliu enjoys reputation, and his works on thesubject selection, novel structure, expression ways are all clearly limited by the statute ofmedia culture.Liuliu’s novels focus on the hot issues in present society in subject, such as houses, medical care, child rearing, the underlying life, the relationship between the urban and ruralareas, the official corruption and so on. These subjects are audience-oriented in order tosatisfy the demands of the audience and to cause the concern and attention of the audience tosome hot issues, which is the same as the usual saying "agenda setting". This is why hernovels win the favor of the readers and the market. The deep structure and language use of Liuliu’s novels are both closely connected withthe media coding skills. On the novel structure, the novel usually use narrative technique asnews, namely to describe a core event as the main line, supplemented by nonsignificantevents. To meet the aesthetic taste of audience in map-reading age, liuliu’s novels choosegraphically narrative strategy, using the ideas and narrative grafting of the film-video art inthe text. At the same time, the text is filled with many current buzzwords, revealing thelanguage features of the Internet age.Because Liuliu’s novels have been influenced by the media culture, they exposed manydefects. Much more are the same in the novel description, characters shaping. Besides a lot ofnovels are not enough to dig out the complexity of human nature. And they are extremely deficient in the ideas of humanities, moral value. The lack of aesthetic quality is just thesymptom causing by media interests which must give rise to alarm.Anyhow, the popularity of Liuliu’s novels owes to the mass media. But the mediaculture formed by the mass media, makes a powerful influence on theme selection, narrativestructure, language use, ways of thinking, which also leads to the flaws in the artistic style. Inthe current media era, that how the writer can make the work win more audience, and at thesame time compose for their own artistic style not just for catering to the public needs andinterest is a thoughtful question.
