With the continuous internalization of sports, more and more people payattention to international sports events. Reading sports news has become anindispensable part in many people’s daily life, and this is even true of English sportsnews translators. As a special literary type, sports news has features such as havingmultitudinous readers, wide information resources, complicated professional termsand idioms, using rhetorical devices such as metaphors, which may create manydifficulties for readers to read. This thesis attempts to discuss the Chinese translation of English sports newsunder the guidance of Nida’s dynamic equivalence theory. It starts with a literaturereview of dynamic equivalence theory. After a discussion of the structure andlanguage features of English sports news, we make an analysis of the Chinesetranslations of English sports news according to Eugene Nida’s dynamic equivalencetheory. This research is intended to provide some insights into Chinese translation ofEnglish sports news for sports news translators, and is expected to offer a trace ofbeneficial revelation for the development of English sports news translation theories. The findings of this research indicate that Nida’s dynamic equivalence translationtheory is applicable to English sports news translation. Nida’s opinion of “the closestnatural equivalence to the source language message” is very important in Englishsports news translation. It is suggested that translators follow Nida’s equivalencetheory and try their best to achieve “the closest natural equivalence”. However, thereare some limitations to achieving this goal, such as a lack of professional knowledgeof sports and translation, and a lack of cultural knowledge of the source language. Therefore, it is recommended that translators should master as much professional andcultural knowledge as possible in order to make better use of the dynamic equivalencetranslation theory for a better translation of sports news.
