Based on twelve-month overseas teaching Mandarin experience of the author,this thesis aims to evaluate the Mandarin textbook of Elyon Christian InternationalSchool,Surabaya,Indonesia. Because of the political reasons, the history of Mandarinlanguage teaching of Indonesia has experienced a time of hardship. The school Elyonwas established by the overseas Chinese Christian Community with the Indonesiangovernment’s allowance on Mandarin language teaching at the end of20century andit has been developing boomingly up to now. Mandarin language teaching inIndonesia has been short of teaching materials and teachers. Elyon adapted the trialversion<Han yu>, which was compiled by Chinese Language and Culture Collegeand published by Jinan University Press.According to the theory of Evaluating Chinese teaching materials,the authorattempts to evaluate the Elyon<Hanyu> from the perspectives of internal system ofthe textbook, the Mandarin teachers and the students from Primary1to Secondary3.As Mandarin teaching environment has changed rapidly, the teachers and thelearners have different expectations from the textbook. From the research, the authorattempts to find out the advantages and disadvantages and try to give somesuggestions on further possible reversing. The conclusion in this thesis is based on theoriginal data collected from the questionnaires in Elyon.It’s still unknown whetherthe suggestions can be adapted in other school.
