Second Language Acquisition is a relatively new subject in Linguistics. It refersto the study of people learning a second language in addition to their first languageand the process of learning and mastering that language. This subject is producedbecause of internationalization of world politics, economics and cultures, and muchmore frequent communication and cooperation between people. China now is alsodeveloping at top speed. People speaking different languages from different countriescome here to make exchanges and cooperation with us. If they want to communicate,but not knowing each other’s language, they won’t get far. As English is the mostcommon foreign language used by people from all over the world whencommunicating, thus it is seen that mastering English is extremely important tomodern people.Based on the theoretical foundations of Second Language Acquisition andVerschueren’s Adaptation Theory, this study analyzes some affecting factors thatlearners will encounter in the process of English Acquistion. These factors can bemainly divided into the following three categories:⑴Whether the English learners can adapt to their mental worlds in the processof learning;⑵Whether the English learners can adapt to the outside environment in theprocess of learning;⑶Whether the English learners can adapt to the culture of the second languagein the process of learning.Based on the analysis to the above affecting factors, this study concludes in theend that, the success of English Acquistion requires joint efforts from many aspects.Firstly, learners need to be aware of those factors which will definitely affect theirlearning process; Secondly, they need to try to avoid negative factors and make use ofthose positive ones; Lastly, if combined with the Theory of Adaptation, learners willmake SLA much more effectively and easily. And then the author puts forward some suggestions for the English teaching and learning in Chinese schools.
