A Study On Characters Of Radical Mu In Shuowenjiezi

It tooks Xu Shen22years to compile ShuowenJiezi, which is the first wordbook with a complete system in Chinese linguistics history and also Considered as a laying foundation work of Chinese Philology. He adopted a completely different approach to the classification of Chinese characters in his ShuowenJiezi, that was to arrang the Chinese characters by different radicals. Based on the theory of Liushu, Xu Shen analyzed the Chinese characters’from the angles of graphic form, pronunciation,and semantic systematically.The stylistic rules and the layout of this wordbook are sophisticated, the annotations are concise and splendid,and simultaneously social phenomena and life Vientiane are included as well. In this sense, XuShen presented a brilliant encyclopedia for all posterity.Radical Mu in ShuowenJiezi is of great importance.There’re as many as127characters in the part of radical Mu in ShuowenJiezi, however, there are also some characters which have close ralationship with radical Mu but they are not in this part.This paper makes a comprehensive analysis on the characters of radical Mu in XuXuan’s recension of ShuowenJiezi.This paper has six parts. Foreword:Sum up the results of previous studies, and illustrate the purpose, significance and research methods in this study. Chapter two: Analysis the semantics of characters of radical Mu, build a complete meaning system of them, and analysis the semantic relationship among these characters. This paper dividecd the meaning system into3categories as a whole,that is the name objects,the description and the action.What’s more, each of the category is divided into several small categories. Chapter three:Study on Chongwen of the characters in the part of radical Mu. Make a research on Chongwen’s clear definit conception, substance and intension, find Xu Shen Chongwen oversights in labeling, analysis the regular pattern of Chongwen, search the font source, explains the research significances. Chapter four:Analysis the cultural connotation of these characters from the ancient medicine and other aspects. Chapter five: Research on the other characters which have close relationship with Mu in graphic form and semantic but belong to different radical parts in ShuowenJiezi. Conclusion: Summarize the whole research work and prospect for future study.
