Children’s books play an important role in children’s learning and their physical andmental development. The market of children’s books in China has great potential in bothactual and potential demand. Although it has made remarkable progress, a variety ofserious issues associated with book design have been exposed, such as poor quality ofbook design, obsolete design concepts and theories and a severe shortage of innovationcapacity. Therefore, based on foreign experience in book design, this paper studies theinteractive design of children’s books, and summarizes the strategic approaches ofinteractive design, in order to enrich the design theories of children’s books and to haveimplications for the innovation of book design. This study adopts the basic approach of practice theory. Based on interaction theoriesand Piaget’s theory of cognitive development, this paper discusses children’s demand forbook design with both theoretical analysis and surveys. After that, this paper analyzes theclassic works of both international and domestic book designers and summarizes thestrategic approach of book design accordingly. Finally, based on the user demand for bookdesign shown in the surveys, the strategic approaches are applied to the design practice. This paper has six parts. The first part introduces the research background andsignificance, outlines both the international and domestic history and current situations ofchildren’s book design, and describes the content and frame of the paper briefly. Thesecond part clarifies the fundamental concepts such as children’s book, the design ofchildren’s book and interactive design, and introduces the theories on interactive designbriefly. The third part analyzes children’s demand for book design according to Piaget’stheory of cognitive development, and conducts two surveys to complement the theoreticalanalysis. The fourth part focuses on the interactive experience children will gain fromreading, discusses the classic works of international and domestic book designers andproposes the strategic approaches of the interactive design of children’s bookscorrespondingly. The fifth part applies the strategic approaches proposed above to designpractice, depicts the details of design planning and implementation and presents the final work. The last part makes a conclusion to the study.
