The Study Of The Images Of Cities In Pai Hsien-yung’s Novels

Pai Hsien-yung is an important writer in Chinese contemporary literaturehistory, and he is also the ifrst writer that was introduced to the readers inmainland China in the last century. In addition to being the background of stories，cities in his novels are also Characteristic roles. This paper plans to study the citiesin Pai Hsien-yung’s novels and his characteristic in creating the images of thecities.According to the authors different modes of creativity and his emotion, inwthis paper, the first two chapters divide his cities into two kindsxities in memoriesand cities in reality. Under the classiifcation, several representative cities arechosen to illustrate，for example, such as Guilin, Nanjing, Shanghai, Taipei,andNew York. First，the part of this thesis focus on the author’ s impressions and hisemotion of these cities. Then it pay attention to the characters in the novels andtheir feelings，memories about these cities and their experiences in these cities tograsp the images of the cities created in Pai Hsi’en-yungs novels.After the complete grasping of the images.the third chapter is about theauthor’s characteristics in the creation of the images of the cities. The ifrst point isthe cultural orientation of cities under the comparison of Chinese and Western.The contrast of then-and-now pay more attention to the conflicts between people’sminds and social reality. The first comparison put more emphasis on thecontradiction between the heterogeneous cultures,which can show more culturaldifferences between cities and better meet our purpose of comparison here. Underthe contrast of Chinese and Western, the third chapter summarized such threecultural differences between the Chinese and Western cities: the gap betweentradition and modern、the contrast of freedom and despotism，and the differentpositioning of these cities about "Foreign Land”“and Motherland” in the eyesof overseas Chinese, The second point i’s the cities histoircal connotation brought by the author’s historical consciousness and the author’s Compassioncontemplation to these cities and their residents. The cultural positioning of thesecities under the view of the contrast of Chinese and Western, and their specialhistorical charm, and the a’uthors unique Viewpoint, these three characteristicsmake the images of these cities in Pai Hsien-yung’s novels branded with thecharacteristic of Pai’s mark.
