As China’s securities market is further opening to the foreign countries, there is anincreasing demand for the translation in securities market information. But relatedresearch in the translation practice is still in its infancy. The translation of Englishsecurities words is not satisfactory for the lack of the guidance of proper theory. Thereare many technical terms without authoritative translation which causes many mistakesand confusions. Further improvement is still needed in many translated financialworks. In view of this phenomenon, the author tentatively applies semantic equivalencetheory to the translation practice of English securities words. According to Nida (2004),equivalence consists of meaning equivalence and style equivalence. And as the form ofsecurities words is relatively fixed, this paper focuses on the equivalence in semanticlevel. This paper first studies the features of English securities words, and thencategorizes them into highly technical words, semi-technical words and non-technicalwords for detailed study of translation strategies. Based on the translation practice ofthe author, this paper aims to find the closest equivalence in the target language. After the illustration of abundant exemplifications, the author finds out that literaltranslation is most suitable to translate highly technical and semi-technical words, butwith different detailed strategies in practice. Free translation is mainly used intranslating non-technical words whose meanings are quite flexible. But both literaltranslation and free translation mentioned above require that the translator possess therelated professional knowledge and be familiar with the idiomatic expression in thetarget language. The topic of this paper is relatively new, and most of the examplesgiven in this paper are selected from the translation practice of the author. It is hopedthat this paper would be of some help to the translation of English securities words.
