During simultaneous interpretation from Chinese to English, it is inevitable that there will be structural differences between the source and target language and possible sociocultural differences between the speaker and the audience. These differences complicate the interpreter’s task. The interpreter can use explicitation as a technique to overcome such differences, ensuring their audience has a clearer understanding of the speaker’s original message. This study seeks to determine the use and impact of explicitation in Chinese-English simultaneous interpreting and to compare the use of explicitation by Chinese and English native speakers.
