A Study On Explicitation Of Personal Pronoun As Subject In English-Chinese Simultaneous Interpreting

With the rapid development of corpus technology,the study of translation universals,especially the study of explicitation,reached its highest point.More and more scholars began to pay attention to the study of subject explicitation of personal pronouns.However,the current researches were still rarely involved in interpreting.Given this,this thesis makes an in-depth study of subject explicitation of personal pronouns in E-C simultaneous interpreting,aims to find out the characteristics of explicitation in the use of personal pronoun subject in E-C simultaneous interpreting,and then discusses the possible reasons for subject explicitation of personal pronouns in E-C simultaneous interpreting.This study attempts to answer the following three questions:(1)During E-C simultaneous interpreting,what interpreting techniques do interpreters often adopt to deal with personal pronoun subject?(2)During E-C simultaneous interpreting,does explicitation occur in the use of personal pronoun subject in interpreted Chinese? If so,by what means?(3)What are the reasons for subject explicitation of personal pronouns in E-C simultaneous interpreting?In order to achieve the research purpose,six bilingual conferences in 2018 Davos Forum are selected as corpus.After transcription,the corpus is divided into two categories: original English(Corpus A)and interpreted Chinese(Corpus B).Then,according to the definition of personal pronoun subject,combining with the study of syntax in Chinese and English,the corpus is aligned at sentence level.Statistics show that there are 823 sentences with personal pronoun subject in English and 576 sentences with personal pronoun subject in interpreted Chinese.After that,the author marks and counts the interpreting techniques adopted by interpreters in dealing with personal pronoun subject,analyzes the personal pronoun subject that shows explicitation,and discusses reasons for that.Through comparative analysis and discussion of the corpus,the major findings of this research are as following: In E-C simultaneous interpreting,interpreting techniques for personal pronoun subject are correspondence(60.08%),ellipsis(34.56%)and addition(explicitness)(5.36%).In the process of explicitation(addition and explicitness),interpreters mainly adopt three ways of subject conversion: from the empty subject “it” to personal pronoun subject;from impersonal subject to personal pronoun subject;from noun subject to personal pronoun subject.There are two reasons for subject explicitation of personal pronouns.One is different dependence on personal pronoun subject in English and Chinese;the other is that facing with simultaneous interpreting involving sensitive international issues or professional technology issues,interpreters often choose to convey information faithfully or add explanatory information.This study provides a new way for explicitation study in the field of interpreting,expands the scope of explicitation research,and provides a theoretical basis for the combination study of explicitation hypothesis and interpretation text.
