Content:As one of the most important translation theory, Newmark’s theory has great influence on translation scholars. According to him, translation is consist of2parts: semantic translation and communicative translation, Both of them are of the same importance. In his opinion, a translation is not good enough until both means above exist harmoniously in it.The theory affects directly on translation of business letters. Unlike other traditional theories that put semantic translation as the first principle in the field, the theory much attention to the communicative value of business letters. Newmark realized that some other factors as other country’s culture and idiomatic expressions were somehow essential for translations as well as translators, which asks great translator will always achieve organic unifications of them according to the objectivity of content of the letter as well as to make sure his translations are in accordance with original ones the2methods:with functional critique and analysis critique.Though Newmark’s theory is of its disadvantages, its nature of case by case and its classification of translations not only provides a new visual angle to translation practice of business letters but also making a appropriate standard for the use of semantic translation and communicative translation, which endow his theory a value of application.With the goal of offering implications to translation of business letters, this essay analysis characters of Newmark’s theory and business letters, through which a balanced approach between semantic translation and communicative translation was put forward.
