It is true that accuracy is and should be the primary and fundamental requirement in news reporting. But there is no denying of the importance of the existence of fuzzy language in. As one of the inherent attributes of language, fuzziness does exist in journalistic English. This thesis concerns the understanding and translation of "fuzzy" language in news reporting.During the past decades, lots of experts and scholars both home and abroad have done numerous researches into fuzzy language and news translation. After comprehensive study of relevant books and papers, the author finds that there are still fields that are worth our future study. Fuzzy language studies in China are mainly made on semantic and pragmatic fields, therefore there still exist large vacancy in the study of fuzzy language translation in news. Fuzzy language in news reports is determined by its stylistic features and out of consideration of timeliness, the need of catering for readers’ psychology, conventions and different aesthetic effects. This thesis probes into translation strategies and methods of fuzzy language in journalistic English based on the data collected from Financial Times. Reception Theory holds readers do have an expectation formed by pre-existing experience, interests and ideals before reading, which is termed as "Horizon of expectation". Such expectations are not statistic, but are satisfied, surpassed, disappointed or refuted in the process of reading. The inconsistency between readers’horizon of expectation and the work is termed as the Aesthetic Distance. Domestication and Foreignization are two translation strategies for translator to choose. In this thesis, the author tends to elaborate the selecting of translating strategies and methods in fuzzy language translation from the perspective of the Reception Theory. By domestication, the translator can narrow the aesthetic distance between the reader and text, while by foreignization, the readers’horizon of expectation is expanded and creative expectation is appealed. This thesis holds that both foreignization and domestication are powerful strategies in the translation of fuzzy language in English journalism. This thesis further suggests some specific methods such as Fuzziness v.s. Fuzziness, Fuzziness v.s. Preciseness, the weakening of Fuzziness, the strengthening of Fuzziness and Reserving of Fuzziness.
