Domestication And Foreignization In The Translation Of Angling Sketches

This thesis probes into the application of domestication and foreignization as two different translation strategies. The English source text including11chapters is Angling Sketches, written by English writer Andrew Lang (1844-1912). The book contains not only lots of description about the fun in angling, but also the author’s reminiscence for his childhood about angling and his pondering about humanity as well as man-nature relationship.Influenced by the ethos of deprecating domestication and promoting foreignizaiton in western countries, presently, more translators are on the side of domestication on international translation forums. Having an increasingly deeper understanding about domestication and foreignization, more scholars have touched upon the topic, however, from such perspectives as Skopos Theories or Cross Cultural Communication, bringing about the relationship between the two strategies with a new look. The scholars believe that domestication and foreignization should not be antithesis of each other but coexist together.According to Schuttleworth and Cowie, domestication is a translation strategy in which a transparent, fluent style is adopted in order to minimize the strangeness of the foreign text for target language readers while foreignization, opposed to domestication, is a translation strategy as well, in which a target text is usually produced deliberately to break target conventions by retaining some of the foreignness of the original in a translated text. The present thesis first defines the two strategies and then applies them to the translation of Angling Sketches so as to deal with some linguistic and cultural differences between English and Chinese. The thesis finally comes to the conclusion that the relationship between domestication and foreignization is symbiotic, like spear and shield, and in the translation they are usually used comprehensively.
