English news has long been a vital port of information exchange through the world. The quality of Chinese translation of English news will directly influence Chinese readers’comprehension of information and the communication effects of English news. Therefore it is essential to make a profound study of the strategies of Chinese translation of English news. This thesis argues that Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory might shed some light on Chinese translation of English news. According to Nida’s Functional Equivalence Theory, translators should not only grasp the content of the source language text and faithfully convey its original meaning, but also take the target readers’ response into consideration. Since his Functional Equivalence Theory attaches great importance to meaning other than form and the readers’ response, it is feasible to integrate this theory with news translation, whose primary function is also to meet the receptor’s needs. The case analyzed in this thesis is a special report On a high from The Economist in June2012. Under the guidance of Functional Equivalence Theory, this thesis discusses the translation strategies employed in the translation process of the case after a thorough study of its linguistic features and comparison between the Chinese and English version. This thesis is composed of three parts:the introduction, the body and the conclusion. The first part aims to provide a general introduction to the present study, including research background, an overview of the case, an overview of Functional Equivalence Theory, and significance of the study. The body part of this thesis consists of three chapters. Chapter One presents an overview of English news and its translation, including the definition and classification of English news as well as definition, features and procedures of its translation. Chapter Two discusses the linguistic features of the case from the lexical and grammatical level. A good grasp of linguistic features of the case is a necessary prerequisite to the summary of translation strategies in the following chapter. Chapter Three focuses on the translation strategies from the perspective of Functional Equivalence Theory, including approaches to achieve equivalence on the word and sentence level. The last chapter is the conclusion part. To conclude, with an interlaced study of translation theory and practice, this thesis points out that Functional Equivalence Theory is an effective way to cope with English news translation and the translation strategies summarized in this thesis may add some new energy to upgrade the quality of Chinese translation of English news, furthermore, to promote information exchange.
