Investigating Interpreters' Subjectivity Consciousness In Escort Interpreting

The "cultural turn" of translational studies in the 1970 s has broadened research scope of interpretation.The subjectivity consciousness of the subject in translating and interpreting activities gradually drew attention and got some achievements,which has also promoted the development of research on interpreting subject.The subjectivity consciousness of interpreter in interpreting activities has become increasingly important and therefore advanced the research on subject and subjectivity consciousness in escort interpreting activities.The interpreter is the main subject of interpreting activities because his/her subjectivity consciousness is always reflected in the interpreting process.It is often the case that the factors affecting the effectiveness of escort interpreting would largely come from escort interpreters.The choices that escort interpreters' made as to their interpreting strategies and styles would greatly influence different aspects in the interpreting activities.To some extent,this primary role of escort interpreters in escort interpreting activities gives rise to more frequent presence of their subjectivity consciousness.To further contribute to this research area,this dissertation will focus on the escort interpreters' subjectivity consciousness in escort interpreting.Based on the results from previous investigations,the current research will select authentic data from the real domestic and international escort interpreting activities.Through a comprehensive analysis of the characteristics and influencing factors of escort interpreting,this research will firstly propose a revised definition of subjectivity consciousness of escort interpreters,and then analyze the data to explore the exerting reasons and concrete manifestations of subjectivity consciousness of escort interpreters,particularly from four perspectives: moral consciousness,non-neutral attitude,choice of expressions in target language,and choice of paralinguistic information.By doing so,this dissertation endeavors to present a more comprehensive and systematic analysis on subjectivity consciousness of escort interpreters.The results from the current study suggest that the role and functions of escort interpreters in escort interpreting cannot be neglected.The escort interpreters' subjectivity consciousness plays an important part in the whole process of escort interpreting activities where the interpreters would always consciously or subconsciously exert their own subjectivity consciousness.Further,they would adopt different interpreting strategies and styles in order to enhance the quality of escort interpreting and push forward communications between the two parties,and thus achieving the communicative purposes of escort interpreting activities.It is hoped that this dissertation can do some help to further expand the scope of escort interpreting research,point out the role and function of escort interpreters,and shed some new enlightenments for future research on subjectivity consciousness of escort interpreters in escort interpreting.
