In recent years, Chinese-English public signs’translation is an important part in the field of Chinese translation studies, which is of great significance to improve China’s image in the world and enhance China’s cultural exchanges with other countries. Public signs belong to pragmatic text. The translation of public signs should not only obey the norm of the source language text, but also follow the characteristics of the target language text and the cultural customs of the target language. Skopostheorie is the core of the German functional translation theory. Different strategies and methods should be adopted according to the different aims of translation. In other words, the purpose of translation determines the translation strategies and methods. The translator should follow the guidelines of "loyalty". Therefore, it is feasible to obtain the correct public signs translation to perform the public language functions under the guidance of functional translation theory. This thesis is based on the analysis of numerous public signs and the comparison and contrast between the Chinese and English versions. This thesis begins with presenting the features and the functions of public signs and the appliance of functional translation theory in public signs. Moreover, it points out the errors and mistakes caused by language difference, culture difference, function misusing and form difference by analyzing the different characteristics of C-E public language and many examples. In this process, from considering the subjectivity of the translator and the objectivity of the audience, the thesis further clarifies that the functional translation theory is the preferred strategy to make the source language text understood by the source language readers equal to the target language text understood by the target language readers. At the same time, the strategies as domestication, foreignization and reciprocity principle and the techniques such as pun, alliteration and rhyme are proved to be the very useful translation methods. There is still some shortage and defects in this thesis. I hope it will be a certain significance to provide some strategies and methods to solve the linguistic and cultural errors and mistakes existing in the public signs translation.
