China is the largest developing country in the world. Over the last60years, China has committed to it’s own development and has also provided significant assistance to other developing countries. China has made great progress and has established a good reputation with its overseas aid policies. Engineering and construction projects are a major part of China’s foreign aid projects and interpreters have an important role in helping to establish and maintain the good image of China within the international community. They promote Sino-foreign friendship and international exchanges. Translation and interpretation are a key factor when forming co-operations. With the increasing number of China-aided foreign projects there will be more interpretation activities that will require many more highly qualified interpreters. This report is based on the interpreting experience of the author’s work in the SKD stadium in Liberia from2005to2007and six months on the Charlotte hydropower station in Sierra Leone in2012. Both of the projects are aided by China. It starts with the requirements of an interpreter who had the desire to work in China-aided foreign country engineering and construction projects. Guided by relative theories, various problems that were encountered in the process of interpreting were analyzed. For example, how the psychological and physical conditions can have an effect on the quality of interpretation. The interpreter’s role and competence will also be discussed in this report. It contains a selection of interpreting tactics for dealing with psychological pressures, how to approach conflict, and the importance of taking notes at all times. The author of this report are also puts forth some problems yet to be solved when interpreting in China-aided foreign countries on engineering and construction projects. His objective is to encourage people to carry out deeper research in this field. For example, what are the skill requirements for the interpreter and how can we improve the interpreting quality? What is the best way to coordinate differences and contradictions when faced with conflict during discussion and negotiation? How do we select the best interpreting tactic? How do we adjust to the physical and psychological conditions and ensure the quality of the interpretation in a difficult and complex environment?...
