Study On Status And Countermeasure Of English Teaching In Physical Education Colleges

College English courses are offered in all types of colleges and universities in China as acompulsory course, every college student in this stage of education must meet the requiredlearning objectives and requirements in order to graduate. To most Chinese college students,English is very hard to learn, especially for those sports majors who are very in culturalfoundation. College English courses have been experiencing continuous reform andimprovement process since it was established in colleges and universities. Nevertheless,today’s college English teaching still has a long way to go. Because although many studentshave learned English during the college, some of them even passed CET-4or CET-6Englishlevel exams, they could not read or speak English after graduation, and this case is stillrelatively common. What does it mean? It illustrates that there are still disadvantages ordeficiencies in our college English teaching, we must keep on reforming and adjusting toimprove and perfect college English teaching, to meet the needs of social development, aswell as the needs of China’s foreign economic, trade, sports, cultural and other aspects ofsociety.For college English teaching reform, currently there are already many research findingsby scholars and universities, they paid much time and spirit in finding them, many resultshave been translated into tangible benefits and have guided college English teaching practice.However, the vast majority of these findings are for common institutions of college Englishteaching, for sports universities, many methods and measures do not apply. Sports collegesand universities have their own background and characteristics. Therefore, in this case, sportscolleges need to figure out their own problems in college English teaching, and find out theproper way to carry out the reform and development. With the development of the age,China’s foreign exchanges have become increasingly frequent. The foreign exchanges inpolitics, economic, culture, sports and other aspects have gained unprecedented development.In2008, Beijing’s successful hosting of the Olympic Games shows the China’s new sportingsuperpower status. In order to cultivate more talents who are good at both sports and English,many sports colleges and universities began to establish new department called sports English.Shanghai University of Sports founded the first English Department (Sports Englishdirection). Subsequently, the remaining thirteen sports colleges have established or will establish this specialty. Hebei Institute of Physical Education established English departmentin2004. As it is a new major, many respects are still in the exploratory stage. Since thansports colleges and universities both have college English teaching and English majorsteaching, how to handle the relationship between the two parts, is a new problem in collegeEnglish teaching reform and improvement. All the sports colleges and universities must trytheir best to find the new ideas to solve all the problems.Based on the above background, this study takes Hebei Institute of Physical Educationfor example, uses documentation method, expert interviews, investigation method, etc. Weinvestigated and analyzed the college English teaching status at present, and finally offeredthe advices for the sports college English teaching reform from teachers, teachingmanagement and hardware construction, and other aspects and reached the followingconclusions:All colleges and universities are currently active in college English teaching reform, aspart of them, English teaching in sports colleges and universities still have many problems tobe solved.Meanwhile, sports specialty has its own original features and glamour, and it has morechances and development space. I hope that all sports colleges and universities are able toseize the current opportunity of educational development, comprehensively improve thequality of college English teaching and improve the overall quality of sports college graduates,to train more comprehensive quality modern sports talents for the country.
