English is an international common language at present, since the China entered into the WTO, the significance of English has been gaining increasingly. The aim of university is to bring up useful people who can meet social’s needs. In order to cultivate more excellent graduates, college common English teaching should be efficient and useful, or it will be a waste of time and energy.X College is a private college, because of some reasons, the efficiency of common English teaching is so low that it results in vicious circling. The writer put forward an opinion that regards effective teaching as the purpose and layered teaching as the method to reform X college common English teaching to solve the problem as low teaching efficient in this college now.The author thinks that the theory of effective teaching provides the theory basic for improving English teaching in X College, but effective teaching can’t take the place of specific teaching strategy and method. How can we realize the effective teaching of common English teaching in X College? After searching for a lot of information, the author found that the way of realizing effective teaching is of great variety, so it is necessary to choose and compound the ways according to the specific circumstance. Having analyzed the English study situation of students, the author holds her own opinion that it will be less efficient if school only takes usual measures such as increase the teachers’population, change common English teachers’ attitude, improve teachers’ teaching ability, change students’learning attitude, improve teaching’s facilities and so on. And the real limitation on the efficiency of the common English teaching is students’ poor English study basis, students’mixed level in one class and too much students in one class. Whereas, class teaching divided by the major leads to the serious polarization of the students. How do college English teaching not only satisfy every students’need for each major but also comply with the law of every student’s personality development to guarantee that every student can make progress? Layered teaching will be the only solution.With the principle of difference, layered teaching splits the students into several groups according to their existing knowledge, study ability and study potential, students of each group have approach level, and teachers teach different knowledge for different groups, then each group can get the best advance and development. Layered teaching is an efficient way of resolving the conflict between the individuality of teaching students in accordance of their aptitude and the collectivity of class teaching. The author plans to layer every aspect such as students and teachers to break traditional teaching pattern and to satisfy the teaching goal of every major and subject, realizing the goal of teaching students in accordance of their aptitude truly.The author put forward the specific idea of layered teaching in X college:one is to solve the problem that students have different English levels by layering the students neatly, another is to improve students’ learning enthusiasm and spur students’ learning motivation by layering the goal of teaching. Thirdly, layer the textbooks and curriculum provision, which makes students learn more relaxed and effective, because it can reach students’ recent developing area, that is to say, students can absorb in the knowledge easily. Fourthly, because teachers have their personal interest and strength, they can provide students with more effective guidance by layering the teachers, and it also can promote teachers’ professional knowledge by doing this. At last, layer the students’ content of examination and evaluation, and teachers can analyze and solve students’ problems more concretely so as to improve the teaching efficiency.There are some conditions needed to make layered teaching become efficient: school should renew their teaching idea and take students centered as their teaching strategy; school should improve their teaching management and guarantee that teaching is developing in high efficiency; school also should meet the material needs in layered teaching, then students can consolidate the knowledge learned in class, yielding twice the result with half the effort. As to the teachers, they should set up the mind of effective teaching, their purpose is to teach students to learn useful knowledge which will be useful in their whole life in limited time, and teachers should improve their own charm because harmony between students and teachers is the condition to realize the effective teaching; teachers also should have strong responsibility at work, which is the basic guarantee for students in private college to realize English effective teaching because they have poor and different levels of English and they are lack of good learning habits.
