Contract Translation Under The Guide Of Functional Equivalence Theory

As a common genre in translation, contract translation is highly logical, professional and meticulous in dictions. Thus, it is often considered as a challenge to translators, especially those who are new to translation in the legal field. This thesis is based on a real case, with the aim to discuss difficulties in contact translation and to provide some feasible solutions.The case comes from a real project on English to Chinese translation of contracts featuring agents and services use. In the whole process of the translation project, Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence theory is employed as the guide to devise the translation strategy, plan and standard. By presenting the whole process of the translation project and summarizing major difficulties and solutions, this thesis aims to provide some reference and advice for translators who frequently deal with contract translations or who might need to translate commercial contracts in the near future.The entire thesis is divided into five parts and nine chapters. The first three chapters comprise part one, mainly providing the background information of the case. Chapter four constructs part two with the focus on the theory background and how it is applied to the translation case. Part three contains chapter five to chapter seven, giving the details on translation preparation, processing and proofreading. Part four is the analysis of difficulties in the translation. Chapter eight discusses challenges and solutions from the angle of word, sentence and paragraph respectively. Chapter nine is the conclusion part, which will summarize all the main points of the thesis.
