Chinese idioms within the profound and extensive Chinese culture, as a gem in the treasury of Chinese nation, are the phrases featuring concise forms, precise meanings and regular types accumulated over the five thousand years’civilization. An idioms textbook for overseas students in China to learn Chinese is needed if they aspire to learn Chinese well and conduct in-depth understanding. However, the idioms materials for overseas students to learn Chinese are scarce. Therefore, a question should be pondered for us in the field of teaching Chinese for overseas students. That is the compilation of materials of Chinese idioms provided for students abroad.This essay will evaluate the characteristics in texts, vocabularies, pictures, practices and so on, analyze the merits and demerits, and discuss the adaptability for overseas students as well as several matters editors should notice via the research of Chinese Idioms Coursebook. Moreover, it will provide some ideas and suggestions about the design for idioms material, which delivers my sincere wish to do a pygmy effort in teaching overseas students Chinese. Chapter one describes the current research situation, purposes, significance, objects and methods in writing essays. Chapter two evaluates and analyzes the layout and design in Chinese Idioms Coursebook edited by Wang Jingdan in terms of exercises, collateral reading as well as the comparison with three other materials with regard to teaching Chinese for overseas students, Handbook of Chinese Idioms, Illustrated Chinese Idioms and Quick Chinese:Stories From Chinese Idioms. Chapter three proposes a certain number of questions in items selection, collocations, interpretive modes, and contexts. Chapter four offers a series of design ideas and suggestions for editing the textbooks of teaching Chinese idioms in style setting, topic selection, literary quotations and paraphrases, practices and cultural introduction. Chapter five concludes the inadequacies and deficiencies.
