Research On The Illustration Of Multi-category Words In MCD

Modern Chinese Dictionary(MCD) is the first modern Chinese standardizeddictionary with authority. It is particularly distinctive for its comprehensive markson word class. Illustration is a very important item for us to check and verify wordclass. So the research on illustration of MCD can help us confirm whether themarks on word class are correct or not.This paper takes the sixth edition of MCD as its benchmark and the researchobject lies in multi-category words with their illustrations. The first processdure isto find out all multi-category words and their illustrations. As to multi-categorywords with illustrations, we check that whether the word class of an item can beproperly reflected in illustration and make a judgment on the item to see if it istruly a multi-category word or not. Secondly, the writer draws a conclusion onthose multi-category words without illustrations and proposes some suggestions ondealing with them. Finally, it is concluded that most illustrations can correctlyverify that the word classes are right, but there are still some disputes on theillustrations. So, the writer of this paper makes a list of those disputableillustrations and hopes to make a contribution to improving MCD.
