Education On Translation And Interpretation In Macau

Four centuries after the arrival of the Portuguese, Macau, the small island located at the southeast of China, has become the window for the West to understand China. Various cultures encountered here and translation activities began simultaneously, shaping Macau into a city with unique and diversified cultural environment. The Jesuit missionaries such as Matteo Ricci, Johann Adam Schall von Bell and Ferdinand Verbiest, arrived at Macau with the ships from different European countries. They introduced the western knowledge to China and translated many Chinese classics into western languages. This was the first encounter of these two totally different civilizations.In1999Macau’s Handover to China has highlighted and moved forward to the unique role of Macau being the platform for East-West communication. It should be noted that translators as the men behind do have a large share of contribution in this remarkable progress. Under the surging tides of globalization, Macau’s translation education is now witnessing more challenges than ever—it should keep the pace of the city’s development. By integrating materials collected from personal interviews, online database and text resources, this thesis will provide a clear picture of Macau’s translation education, including undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes with information on course curriculum, course design, exchange and co-operations and career development. The writer is in hope that this paper may raise concerns and reflections on Macau’s translation education, and finally some food for thoughts for the improvement of a translation education system.
