This paper is based on the writer’s Chinese teaching experience at Melbourne Grammar School, Australia. The paper analyses the Chinese characters homework of156students’ as well as the Chinese characters textbook, which was written by the school itself, and combines it with the result of a questionnaire which has been done among the students, tries to present some feasible suggestions to improve current Chinese character teaching in Melbourne Grammar School.This article consists of five parts. The first part is preface, which introduces the background, significance, objects and methods of the research. As for the second part, it mainly describes the studies of Chinese characters teaching and learning.The third part is the brief introduction of current Chinese character teaching in Melbourne Grammar School, analyzing from different angles such as teaching approaches, teachers, students.The fourth part first analyzes the characters writing mistakes which have been made by Melbourne Grammar School students, also sorting the mistakes into different categories, searching for possible reasons for the mistakes. Based on the analysis, it discusses what could be the problems existing in teaching approaches, textbook, teachers and students. According to the discussion above, the paper presents further suggestions for characters teaching in Melbourne Grammar School.The last part is the conclusion, mainly summarize the article, also pointing out what could be done better in the article.
