The study on literature of historical geography is one of the important content of historical geography research.During the late Qing dynasty, significant changes of natural geographical environment and humane geographical environment have taken place in "Eastern Four Leagues" in Inner Mongolia region. In1906, the three months of investigation of the eastern Inner Mongolia by Prince Su Shan Qi is the Qing dynasty’s decision based on the special geographical environment of the "Eastern Four Leagues" in Inner Mongolia area. The thesis’s aim is to explore its value and limitations in Inner Mongolia by examining the report and its retinue written by Prince Su Shan Qi and his staff. These inspection reports with distinctive features and spatial outstanding inspection constitute the important documents study of regional history and geography of "Eastern Four Leagues" from the early19th century to the20th century in Inner Mongolia. By writing the thesis the author tries to comment the characteristics of these documents and their reference value in historical geography reach objectively. So that people will have a little knowledge about these documents which have not gain great emphasis on academic literature.The thesis contains four parts.The first part is an regional overview of "Eastern Four Leagues" in Inner Mongolia during Qing Dynasty period. This party not only tries to combed the established process of southern Mongolia’s joining in Qing Dynasty and the process of building the flag system of Inner Mongolia but also analyze the boundaries and division of "Eastern Four Leagues" and the principle of its division. What’s more, the author also make research on the influx of mainland agricultural population in the "Monte "and the time, process, quantity, type and other aspects of Qing court’s regional setting of "Eastern Four Leagues" in Inner Mongolia.The second part mainly discusses the North Patrol activities of Prince Su Shan Qi and expounds the value of his inspection report from the perspective of historical geography. At first, with the historical background of the North Patrol activities of Prince Su Shan Qi, this part makes a detailed analysis of the "Jindandao" riot,"Boxer country change" and the "New Deal" during the later Qing Dynasty and the impact of the broke-out of Russo-Japanese War in1904on regional policy, military geography pattern and social history of Inner Mongolia. Then, the author makes a belief introduction of the life of Prince Su Shan Qi and his North Patrol activities of "Eastern Four Leagues" in Inner Mongolia. By examining the relates documents the author also draw a simple schematic sketch and route summary table of Prince Su Shan Qi’s North Patrol route which directly demonstrate the route and region of the North Patrol in detail. Finally, this part makes a comprehensive discussion on the value and limitations of Prince Su’s inspection report of Inner Mongolia——The Memorial to the Throne about Prince Su Shan Qi’s Inspection Activitives in Mongolia and His Proposal.The third part is the core part and the trunk of the thesis. It mainly investigates the value of the North Patrol official reports from the perspective of historical geography. This part firstly introduces the life of Chen Zushan and then discusses the writing process and version, the content and value, the limitations of his work——The Travel diary about eastern Inner Mongolia and so on. Then the thesis makes a introduction of the life of Feng Chengqiu and his work The inspection diary about eastern Inner Mongolia. The author also makes a comparison of the written versions, the content, the value and the limitations of the work with Chen Zushan’s The Travel Diary about Eastern Inner Mongolia and Feng Chengqi Singned a Ppetition that is the Proposal about Ggoverning Inner Mongolia and Mongolia to the Lifan Bu.. In regard to Wu luzhen’s inspection reports of Inner Mongolia——The Introduction of the Eastern Four Leagues Inner Mongolia and The Recommendation on Governing Mongolia the thesis makes a discussion on the content, the value and the limitations of the two versions by examining Wu Luzhen’s life and his ideas. At last, I analysis the meaning of Yao Xiguang’s two inspection actives about Inner Mongolia and the value of The Preliminary Recommendation about Organizing Mongolia Affairs.The fourth part is the last part which mainly discusses the transverse and longitudinal characteristics of the official reports of Northern Patrol written by Prince Su Shan Qi and his fellows from the inspection of spatiality and timeliness.
