All teaching activities are based on teaching materials, which is also the source ofacquiring knowledge and skills for students. Teaching materials plays a key role inteaching Chinese to foreigners. The scientificity and rationality of teaching materialsdirectly affect the efficiency and result of teaching activities, especially in the initial stageof teaching Chinese to foreigners. I choose“Learn Chinese with Me”and “HappyChinese”as the research objects in this thesis. They are the teaching materials I used inConfucius Institute of Western Kentucky University when I taught Chinese there.Hopefully both excellence and deficiency of these two textbooks can be found out throughcomparison and analysis,which would provide some advice for Chinese teaching andtextbook improvement.This thesis consists of seven parts:the first part introduces research objects,thebackground and significance of this research and some related studies. The second partemphasises on overall structures of these two textbooks. The third part is about thecompiling of texts,including topics,contents and practicability. The forth part focuses onthe comparison of vocabularies,such as quantity,grade distribution and annotation. Thefifth part aims at finding out whether these two textbooks are cultural and interesting. Thesixth part is based on the shortcomings of “Learn Chinese with me” and “Happy Chinese”.Some advice about improving the compilation of Chinese teaching materials and choosingbest teaching methods is also given in this part. The last part is conclusion,whichsummarizes all the comparisons and analysis above.Hope this thesis can reveal both similarity and differences between “Learn Chinesewith me” and “Happy Chinese”, as well as their advantages and shortcomings,whichwould improve the compilation of Chinese teaching materials.
