Popular science articles have played an increasingly important role in scientific andtechnical popularization and in improving the public scientific literacy with the rapiddevelopment of science and technology as well as the globalization. However, owing to thelack of the right theoretical guidance, there crops up problems about barriers and illogicalphenomena in many English translations of popular science articles. Therefore, higherrequirements for translation of popular science articles are put forward. The writers of popular science articles tend to adopt lots of rhetorical devices such asmetaphor when they are working on them. The research of metaphor is focused initially onartistic expressions and later on the interdisciplinary research on rhetoric, pragmatics, cognitive linguistics. Since1970s, more attention has been paid to translation of metaphor, followed by the systematic studies done by Newmark and Nida. Since metaphor is merelya special expression of the particular culture, relatively integrated and comprehensivetranslating strategies shall be adopted in translation to restore the meaning and culturalexperience contained in resource text. This thesis, based on the translating task of Autobiography of Bacteria, lays emphasison the types of metaphor and the corresponding translation methods in Chinese popularscience articles. The first chapter introduces the background, the translation principles andmethods of Chinese popular science articles. The second chapter analyzes the difficulties inthe process of finishing the task. The third chapter comes up with the types of metaphor inthe Chinese popular science articles and their translation methods: using the equivalentwords and fixed images in target language for ontological metaphors, adopting literaltranslation for structural metaphors to keep the original images and only conveying meanings for orientational metaphors. The conclusion is given in the fourth chapter.
