A Preliminary Study On Comedies By Stan Lai And"Performance Workshop"

Stan Lai is one of a famous drama director in Chinese theatre. He has created a lot of excellent works for Chinese even global theatre by solid drama creation skills and unconstrained style of theatre creative ideas from1983,in which year he came back to Taiwan and started to participate in theatre creation. Comedy creation accounts for a large proportion of his thirty years of creation career. The unique growth and education experience brings him interaction perspective of eastern and western culture, especially understanding towards to the truth of Buddhism and research on history and theory of Western Drama help him create thoughtful and entertaining comedies. The thesis expounds carefully the application of collective improvisation of performance workshop led by him in drama creation beginning with learning on social and cultural environment, which impact his drama creation. Other than that, it summarizes and concludes the aesthetic characteristics of "mixture of sadness and humour" of his comedies as well as it’s contribution, significance and deficiency to theatre creation through analyzing his "crosstalk dramas", comedies adapted from western comedies, social satirical comedies and comedy components of serious drama.
