A Studyof The Lost Chronological Works About Du Fu’s Poetry In Song Dynasty

Finding the specific writing time of every poet is an basic work for the research on Du Fu. Based on the writing time, the scholars can reveal the background and unearth the relevant historical facts. This project begins from the middle of the Northern Song Dynasty. A lot of conclusions and achievements have been made in this project because of the amendment and supplement made by scholars throughout the whole dynasty. However, many chronological books about Du Fu’s poetry have been lost in the long process of spreading. And these books’styles, achievements and the authors’opinions can’t be showed to others. We can infer some basic information about the lost books from the titles, the prefaces, the postscripts and the cites of the extant variorums. This is of great significance to deeply study on chronicling Du Fu’s poetry in the Song Dynasty.Based on introducing the evolution of Du Fu’s poetry chronicling and general situation about the chronological works of Du Fu’s poetry in the Song Dynasty, the paper collects related material and makes comprehensive study of four lost chronological results of Du Fu’s poetry. This paper is divided into five chapters. The first chapter describes the evolution of Du Fu’s poetry chronicling according to the style of Du Fu’s poetry chronicling. The scholars in the Song Dynasty explore the most suitable writing form while pursuing the accuracy of poetry chronicling. The earliest Du Fu’s split chronological poetry and the chronicle of Du Fu only contains the factors for chronicling Du Fu’s poetry. Later, Du Fu’s poetry were sorted in chronological order. It marks the real rise of Du Fu’s poetry chronicling in the Song Dynasty. With the development of chronicling, the scholars begin to mark the creation time under poems’title. Then they emphatically counted the number of Du Fu’s chronological poetry in the foundation of collating Du Fu’s poetry in the Song Dynasty. There are13chronological works of Du Fu’s poetry which are handed down from the Song Dynasty. According to the prefaces, postscripts and the bibliographic records of these works, the scholars pay close attention to the chronicle factors.Besides, we can speculate that eight of the lost books about Du Fu1poetry are chronological from the existing material.Chapter2to chapter5make a detailed research on four lost chronological works. Wang Dechen’s annotation to Du Fu’s poetry are repeatedly quoted in the extant variorums. He sequences Du Fu’s poetry as the order made by Wang Zhu and his other books also involve some content about chronicling Du Fu’s poetry.Huang Bosi devote himself to the collection and collation of Du Fu’s poetry. He has unique thinking about the order of Du Fu’s poetry and compiles the first chronological anthology of Du Fu in the Song Dynasty.That book establishes the chronological style and has a profound influence. Bao Biao is a famous historian. In the light of the concept of poetry chronicle and the information preserved in the notes on poet and poetry, we can reasonably infer that Bao Biao chronicles Du Fu’s poetry based on the history of the Tang Dynasty and Du Fu’s life experience in his book. Liang Quandao’s achievements are partly preserved in other books though his book is lost. After intensive study, we can see the context between this book and other chronicles of Du Fu.
