This paper is a summary of the translation of The Dusky Philosophy by FrankStockton, and makes a trial to go for the text analysis in translation practice following thetranslation-oriented text analysis model proposed by Nord. Special attention is given to itsinstructiveness, universality and practical applicability to the translation process. On the basis of Nord’s model, the paper tries to present the translation principles ableto act as the guidance to solve the translation problems. Firstly, the author gives a detailedanalysis of the source text (ST), drawing a tentative conclusion of the translation type, style, principle and its probable problems by making a comparison of the interpretation onintratextual and extratextual factors. Then, the paper tries to testify the correctness of thetranslation principle and to check the actual problems of translating The Dusky philosophy. It is proved that translation-oriented text analysis requires the translator not only to make athorough understanding of the source text and an accurate explanation of the relationshipbetween the source language system and its specification, but also to take into account ofall the factors which affect the translation process, so as to allow the translator to determinea suitable translation strategy for the specific translation purposes.
