Modal is an important feature of Chinese, which is rich and distinctive in Chinese dialect, playing a very important role in people’s communication and expression. Different dialects have different modal system, so Dialect has great research value. Dialect of Yongzhou is numerous and has its own characteristics. In the thesis, from the perspective of synchronic, we employ survey, comparison, description and other research methods and take the Dialect of Yongzhou as research object to obtain first-hand information through field survey and then sort out comparatively complete modals in the Dialect of Yongzhou. Based on the description on the structure of the sentence, and the modals in Dialects of Yongzhou are classified according to their features, the paper also analyze the functional characteristic of the modals, thus to establish system of the Yongzhou Dialect. Through this research, the thesis aims to lay a foundation for further study of Yongzhou dialectical grammar, and provide clues to the development and evolution of Chinese Dialect.The thesis consists of five parts:Part I:Introduction. In this part, the author not only introduces the geographical and cultural circumstances, history of Yongzhou, overview of Yongzhou dialect Research,, past and present study of modal and dialectical modal and phonetic system of Yongzhou Dialect but also explains the purpose, meaning and methods of the research.Part II:About related concepts and classification standards of Modal. Modal is a kind of word which is rich and unique in Chinese. It can be used alone or together to represent a variety of tone and other structural components. In this section, the author distinguishes the modals from those speech particles and interjections people often confuse, and then find out the difference between modals and particles and interjections, identify the reason why it is easy to confuse. In addition, the thesis summarizes the classification criteria used in some modal study and illustrate the classification criteria adopted herein. Part III:The classification research on Yongzhou the Dialect. This chapter is basically a collection of all the Modals in Yongzhou dialects with a total number of25. According to the function and significance of modal, modal can be categorized as developmental modal, modal particle and interrogative word, Condition modal particle in Yongzhou dialect contains’的、了1、'”while modal particle include’了2、哉、着、得、嘞、呕、唸、唻、噢1、啊1、蛮、诶1、哎、嘇、啰、的话、去了"; there are "啊2、吧、嘞2、噢2、诶2"in interrogative word. A detailed discussion is made on modal function and significance expressed by each type of word.Part IV:Research on the system of modal in Yongzhou Dialect. The thesis carries out a comprehensive and systematical analysis and categorization from basic form, phonetic structure, sentence distribution and similar successive application of Yongzhou Dialect. The basic form is divided into monosyllabic words and two-syllable tone Modal; by way of forms, phonetic structure concludes the phonological features and relations of Yongzhou Dialect by way of forms; the distribution of modals in Yongzhou dialect are discussed from syntactic distribution level, including two locations, that is in the middle and at the end of a sentence. The presence of modals in these two positions expresses different functions and modal meaning. Similar successive application refers to conjunction with modals; the paper listed the conjunction with the two and the conjunction of three in the dialect of Yongzhou, which are shown by table or citation.Part V:Conclusion. This section is a summary of the whole chapter study, which roughly describe the basic feature of Yongzhou Dialect through the previous synchronic description, analysis and summary of modals in Yongzhou Dialect.
