The translation unit, an important research subject in both translation theory and practice, has been discussed for a long time by scholars both at home and abroad. Since the translation unit is the basic unit in translating, the identification of its form can provide important guidance for both translation and interpreting practice, but up to now scholars still can’t reach an agreement on its nature and form. Besides, most researches have focused on written translation with little attention to interpreting. Guided by sense units in Interpretive Theory, this thesis discusses the interpreters’application of various interpreting techniques in interpreting with sense units as interpreting units. This thesis firstly introduces one of the core concepts in Interpretive Theory, namely, the sense unit, and then analyzes the relationship between sense units and interpreting units and points out the feasibility of regarding sense units as interpreting units. Based on the analysis in the previous chapters, the following part is devoted to presenting the dynamic characteristics of interpreting units through concrete examples and analyzing interpreting units from three language levels including vocabulary, sentences and discourse. The last part, by analyzing the concrete examples from the interpreting practice, focuses on respectively presenting the interpreting techniques adopted by the interpreter in different levels of interpreting units to deliver the sense of the source language.
