In the process of English-Chinese sight interpreting, the division and cohesion of sight interpreting units are two major problems:it affects the quality of the interpretation, and the audience's comprehension of the real meaning of discourse; it also affects interpreters'performance. This thesis is based on the remarks by Hillary Clinton at Asia Society in New York. By comparing the reference interpretation and writer's version transcribed from writer's recorded practice, the writer of the thesis analyzes the problems in sight interpreting practice first, including the frequent division and the improper division of sight interpreting units and then analyzes the reasons that cause improper division of sight interpreting units, including the frequent division by preposition, narrow reading space and the wrong division of syntactic structure. Second, the writer of the thesis analyzes the problems of cohesion of sight interpreting units, including the lacking and the wrong cohesion of sight interpreting units and then summarizes the reasons that cause improper cohesion of sight interpreting units, including literal interpretation and the improper division of sight interpreting units. At last, the thesis proposes coping strategies on the division of sight interpreting units, including adjusting reading space and dividing sight interpreting units in proper way and coping strategies on the cohesion of sight interpreting units, including applying syntactic linearity and adding cohesion among sight interpreting units.
