| With the deepening of globalization, films and TV series have become increasinglypopular. While subtitle translation embraces unique features and limitations, the translatorsneed to consider audiences’ expectation, and select translation strategies accordingly.Unlike regular readers, audiences have their own concerns regarding the final output ofsubtitle translation. Subtitle translators often need to overcome various difficulties toensure the delivering of information, as well as audiences’watching experience.This paper centers on a case study based on the subtitle translation of American TVseries The Newsroom. Through analyzing the translation process, the paper defines thefeatures and limitations of subtitle translation, focusing on four major difficulties: longsentences, background information, wording and phrasing, and translation strategyadjustment under the influence of Chinese culture. Base on the audiences’ watchingexperience consideration, the paper further provides a series of alternative solutions.Meanwhile, the paper underscores the importance of considering audiences’ perspectiveduring subtitle translation, as their concerns are critical to the selection of translationstrategies.As the ultimate serving target for subtitle translation, audiences’ needs and expectionsmust be addressed as the top priority to ensure the best possible communication effect andwatching experience. |
