Language is a mirror to reflect social changes, and words are the most sensitive one of all linguistic elements since any change in society will be reflected in words in the fastest and most direct way. Neologisms, after appearing, are frequently used by people in their daily conversations, newspapers, magazines, etc.. With neologisms playing a vital role in the introduction of Chinese culture, it is of great importance to translate them into acceptable and accurate English for the sake of effective communication between China and western countries. Carefully choosing some commonly used neologisms as examples, this thesis, from the perspective of eco-translatology, will discuss the English translation of these neologisms, focusing on the linguistic, cultural and communicative aspects, as well as "’making up’for the lacking elements in the target eco-environment" and "’leaning on’either the source-text ecology or the target-text ecology". After a detailed analysis, the paper will come to conclude the features of the English translation of Chinese neologisms. As far as the English translation of Chinese neologisms is concerned, many scholars have done research on it from various perspectives, making huge contribution for communication between China and western countries.Yet most of these studies are still confined to such levels as transliteration(transliteration with explanation), literal translation, free translation(free translation with explanation), or have been done from some linguistic perspectives. Only one post-graduate dissertation has applied the theory of "translator’s selection and adaptation to the translational eco-environment" to assess the different versions of translation and eliminate the less satisfactory ones and recommend the more satisfactory ones on such basis. The eco-translatology theory has not yet been used to explore the method of the English translation of Chinese neologisms. Moreover, in the long run, there exists no comprehensive and systematic theoretical guidance for the English translation of Chinese neologisms, and mistakes can be found here and there. In the analysis of the examples of wrong translation of Chinese neologisms, this thesis, from the perspective of eco-translatology, makes use of the three aspects of the three-dimensional(linguistic dimension, cultural dimension, communicative dimension) transformation,"’making up’for the lacking elements in the target eco-environment" and "’leaning on’either the source-text ecology or the target-text ecology" brought up with by Professor Hu Gengshen to explain and thus works out more accurate and acceptable translation. The significance of this thesis is to analyze the English translation of Chinese neologisms and summarize more optimized translation methods and principles, thus introducing China’s latest situation and newest changes to English readers more accurately and reinforcing the communication and interaction between China and western countries.
