Study On The Teaching Of New Words In TCFL

Since China began its opening and reforming, it has seen a rapid socio-economic development and the emergence of a great many new things, which again have led to tremendous changes in Chinese people’s thinking. As language itself is a mirror reflecting social evolvement, Chinese language has reacted to the society’s great advances with a multitude of new words. These new words have merged into the Chinese vocabulary, making the language richer, fresher and livelier. Ever since2006, having recognized the importance and value of those new words in people’s daily life, Ministry of Education of China has annually published the new words of each year in Chinese Language Situation Report in the form of annals. The stock of new words has come into Chinese vocabulary as a so important part that it can’t be ignored by TCFL. I investigated the new words teaching in TCFL by way of:making statistical analysis on the quantity and proportion of new words in the textbooks; summarizing the teaching methods of new words in classroom; making a questionnaire on the students’knowledge and acquisition of new words. The results of the investigation are that the quantity and proportion of new words in comprehensive and speaking textbooks is very small, that many teachers don’t pay enough attention to the new words teaching, and that students don’t have a satisfactory acquisition of new words though they show great interest in them.According to these findings, I put forward some suggestions which, among others, include: compiling teaching aids with reference to the current textbooks; finding and applying new words teaching principles; involving teacher’s participation outside classroom, and compiling new words dictionaries.After the overall investigation on the new words teaching, I made the above practical suggestions in this paper, hoping more in-depth and thorough study on new words teaching could be made in the future.
