The English translation of new words on the textbook for learning Chinese as a foreign language is the main reference for Chinese learners to study new words,especially elementary Chinese learners.Standard and accurate English translation of new words can not only help students fully understand the meaning of words,but also guide them how to use it correctly.English translation of new words in current Chinese textbooks for foreign students has caused heated discussions in academic circles due to errors,inaccuracies,or insufficiency and there are many related research results.Published under the new concept of “combination of teaching and examining”,HSK Standard Course is one of the widely-used textbooks and there is not much research on its English translation.This article will take the English translation of HSK Standard Course(volumes 1,2,3)as the key research object,sort out its target interpretation problems and attempt to propose solutions.First,the new word annotation mode and annotation method of this textbook are initially evaluated and examined through statistical analysis methods.Secondly,a questionnaire is set up to investigate a series of problems caused in the process of using the vocabulary of the HSK Standard Course(volumes1,2,3)for Chinese learners of the Confucius Institute at the Tbilisi Open University.Thirdly,this article combs and explains in detail the English translation of new words in the HSK Standard Course(volumes1,2,3)from three aspects: grammar,semantics and pragmatics.Then,on the basis of exploring the causes of the problem of English translation of new words,this article attempts to summarize the principles of English translation of new words in Chinese textbooks for foreigners,and proposes English translation strategies of new words,namely,the morpheme interpretation method,multiple definitions method,auxiliary paraphrase diversification,and error-preventing method.Finally,through the questionnaire survey,further feasibility study and feedback of the English translation strategies proposed inthe thesis are carried out,with a view to providing more comprehensive suggestions for the translation of new words on the textbook for learning Chinese as a foreign language.
