The rapid development of agricultural modernization of western developed countries andof the Soviet Union, and the extreme backwardness of agricultural productivity in China afterthe founding are the international and domestic background of the agricultural modernizationthoughts of Mao Zedong. After the founding of new China, the exploration practice ofChinese agricultural modernization went mainly through three stages by Mao Zedong: theyare the movement of agricultural cooperation, people’s Commune and emulation with Da-Zhaiin agriculture. During these stages, Mao Zedong’s agricultural modernization theory andpractice showed themselves mainly in the treatment of several important pairs ofrelations: changing the relation of production to promote the development of productivitycontinuously; based on agriculture, raising industry and agriculture together; first agriculturalcooperation and second mechanization; emphasizing the importance of science andtechnology, putting particular emphasis on the function of spirit; absorbing the internationaland domestic experience in the process of agricultural modernization widely. His handling ofthe relations fully shows the theoretical characteristics such as seeking truth from facts, takingstage and forward-looking characteristics. Because of the influence of subjective andobjective factors, Mao Zedong’s thoughts of agricultural modernization after the foundinghave some inevitable limitations, such as insufficient understanding of the economicdevelopment of agriculture, incomplete implementation of priority to the development ofproductive force, as well as exaggeration of the role of the relation of production and thefunction of spirit. But they have great significance and far-reaching efforts, teaching us thatwe must respect the objective law of development and the actual situation in the process ofagricultural modernization, proceeding from reality, seeking truth from facts, making relationof production and productivity match each other, taking good care of all the relations in thedevelopment of agricultural modernization.
